One of the island's most populous species, wingull are a common sight around the beaches and port. As opportunistic feeders, their diet is comprised primarily of fish, but also consists of bugs, seeds, corphish, and table scraps; it is not unusual to see wingull flocked around a dining establishment, scavenging for leftovers. Curiously attracted to shiny objects, they have a tendency of carrying off unedible items, usually valuables, which they will then hide around the island at whim. Not known to be very adept flyers, as they are unable to keep their wings flapping while in flight, wingull instead glide on updrafts and ocean winds.
The evolved form, pelipper, dines almost exclusively on fish. Skimming over the surface of the water, it scoops prey up in its mouth as it flies. Despite coming from the same line, wingull often harrass a perched pelipper for its catch, pecking at its head to distract it and steal the fish from their beaks. Sometimes a pelipper may be seen with its young or some other small pokemon being carried in its beak- this is a means of transport, as well as to protect them from potential predators.
Nested around the island in large colonies, flocks of wingull and pelipper build their nests on steep sea cliffs where possible, but also in secure locations on the ground. A monogamous species, pairs usually lay up to three eggs in a nest at a time, rarely more. Chicks fledge at about 10 weeks of age, and are fully mature at four years old.
Among Poyi's aquatic life are carvanha, a well-known danger when exploring out into the jungle's depths. A predatorial as well as scavenging species, swarms will attack anything that enters their water ferociously, be it alive or dead. A daring explorer would be wise to tread the jungle with caution as, with jaws capable of chewing through metal, their bite can easily sever off a less than wary limb. Even brushing a carvanha can be exceptionally painful, as their Rough Skin hurts to touch.
Carvanha spawn during the rainy season, laying anywhere from 700 to 4000 eggs at a time, which will hatch in two to three days. Young carvanha will become fully mature at 18-24 months old, depending on conditions. They all live in the jungle's waters until evolution, at which point the newly evolved sharpedo will follow the rivers to join its kind in the ocean and regularly eat visiting school children by the boatload.
During the dry season, when the waters have dried up and brush fires occasionally start, dead and baked carvanha may be collected to serve at the hotel.
An invasive species, purrloin and its evolved form, liepard, were introduced to the island by ships docking in from the Unova region. Their generalist diet allowed them to adapt easily to the island environment, living off of the native supply of rodents, birds, fish, and bugs. Competing with native houndour for these resources as well as land, their presence has both put strain on the dog pokemon, and contributed to having decimated the indigenous species of rodent pokemon that had lived there.
Purrloin and liepards may be spotted high in trees or down in the dense undergrowth. They are excellent climbers, as well as being strong swimmers, though they are perhaps not as inclined to water as may be others... especially where carvanha are found to inhabit. Mostly nocturnal hunters, liepard will stealthily stalk their prey and strike them swiftly from behind. The smaller purrloin, on the other hand, tend to be opportunistic hunters- scavengers, known to steal food from other pokemon, as well as items from people when they venture into the town.
Solitary creatures, individuals of either gender live independently in their own claimed territory. For males, these territories typically do not overlap, as they can be very aggressive towards one another, while females may have their territories within that of one or more males. On the island, their "breeding season" lasts all year long. Litters of up to four purrloin kittens are born in a den or cave, or sometimes in a hollow tree. They become fully mature at about 18 months, at which point they may evolve into liepards, or stay as purrloin, depending on their experience.
